Ecclesfield Church round walk through Grenoside

Many buses stop near Ecclesfield Church, worth a visit in itself. Facing the Church take the lane that goes up the left side, between the church and the cemetery. After the houses the road becomes a track. When this track divides keep right and cross a little footbridge and over fields to reach Whitley Lane.

Go left then right and take the second footpath on the right, to the left of a house. Keep going northwards to Horbury House, a very substantial set of buildings and grounds. Go along the road from the house past Horbury Common, until reaching a residential area of Burncross. Continue until a footpath goes left and into Foxfield Spring Wood. On leaving the wood keep going ahead, going past another large house and estate, Barnes Hall which will be over to your right. Keep ahead roughly south to  meet a small road.

Cross over and go right for short distance to a footpath going down to the delightful hamlet of Woodseats. Go through the hamlet - right over a stile and past a new house, and then keeping right up to the main A61 road. Cross with great care. Take the track opposite that goes past the riding stables. Bend round to the right, ignoring the track up to the left and take the pretty footpath to the left of a house and garden. Keep on this path along the bottom of Greno Woods.

After about 300 metres a substantial path goes left uphill. Keep uphill following the Sheffield Country walk - roughly southwest. You should eventually see an interpretation board and map. Keep past this until reaching the Woodhead Road opposite Wheata Wood car park.

Cross over and walk up past the car park to find a path going left behind it. Keep on this track for about 600 metres and take a small footpath left through dense woodland. This will eventually bring you to a stile onto a path that comes out onto the main road through Grenoside village. Cross the road and walk down Greno Gate opposite. At the end take the path into Greno Woods and take the first right that stays close to houses. At the bottom you will come out at a junction with the A61 opposite Whitley Lane.

Walk along the lane and in about 250 metres take a footpath right. This comes out at a lovely row of cottages at Middleton Green. Walk ahead roughly east along the lane past houses and Whitley Hall cricket club to meet the road back to Ecclesfield.  If you prefer not to walk along the fairly busy road, take the footpath left going up behind the houses and past the cemetery back to the church.

Back at the church you could visit the delightful Petit Cafe, and there is also a very good little fish and chip shop near the bus stops.

This walk is about 5 miles, with about 200 metres of ascent, mainly through Greno Woods.
