Around Loxley

7 miles. Some ascents and descents. Cumulative ascent around 180 metres.

Another North Sheffield favourite, this was the first walk I did going further afield from my home during lock down.I drove and parked on Ben Lane at the bottom of the walk up to Loxley Common and Edge. I am describing the walk from Loxley Road, which is easily reached by bus. Or there is the tram to Malin Bridge and a walk up to Loxley Road. You could join the walk at any point that's convenient for you.

Many paths go left off Loxley Road down to the river, which you can follow on either bank to Rowel Bridge. If taking the south bank take the track down to the left at the houses and old mill just before the cemetery.

Pond at Olive House, Loxley Valley

At Rowel Bridge cross the road. If you want to avoid walking through the old factories, as I did, go to the left and after the road bridge take the path going uphill towards Beacon Wood. When the path out of Beacon Wood bends right to go back downhill to the factory, take a path steeply up to the left through woodland. At the top you find a junction of several paths. Climb two stiles to take the path ahead - (not the one going uphill). Keep going about 400 metres then go down to the right on a path leading to the fishing pond. Walk along the edge of the pond - which you keep on your right and soon reach a bridge at Stacey Bank with the big Damflask dam ahead.

Go right uphill to the main Bradfield road. Turn right here and take the first road on the left past the garden centre. Keep on the road as it climbs up to Holdsworth. There look out for a stile over the wall to the right. Take this path. Keep on it between a wood and houses and past Haighenfield Farm. At a stile cross and go left up to the farm track. Go right on the track and follow to the road at Stubbing Lane. Go right and downhill for about 150 metres. Take a path left through a small wood and past the golf course to the road at Long Lane. Cross the road and walk along the track opposite to the car park.

Loxley Edge

At the far side of the car park keep ahead along Loxley Edge until reaching the trig point at 239 metres. After the trig a path goes right into birch trees and down through pretty woodland. Keep going down. At the bottom of the wood take the track going down to the right past allotments to Ben Lane. Cross the road and go right, taking the first footpath on the left down to a residential road. Turn right down the road to arrive back at Loxley Road. You can then return to your car, catch a bus or walk down to Malin Bridge for the tram.

NB When I walked it the path on the south bank between the footbridge near Olive House and Rowel Bridge was impassable due to part of the river bank being washed away. So either cross back here to the north bank or go uphill a short way and right onto the upper path.

Along the river navigation will never be that tricky but it can get a bit confusing through Loxley Common. Find the trig point and from there keep down and roughly south and you should be fine.
