2 short walks with Mike

These walks of around a mile don't need detailed description. You can take your pick of directions to go in the areas described.

The first is around the Upper Don river near Wortley and Thurgoland. There is a bus to Wortley and if you get off by the church you can find a path tht goes down the right hand side and round to the left of the church down to Finkle Street. Turn right and cross the Trans Pennine Trail and take a footpath going left at the junction of two roads, crossing a track and continuing to meet the river Don. If you are in a car you can park on the track that is crossed here by going a little further along Finkle Street and turning sharp left onto it.

We crossed the footbridge by some stepping stone and continued up ahead, then turning left at the far side of an enclosed plantation, to reach a weir. Some children were having a marvellous time jumping in the water here. We turned right and followed the path as it passed the fishing pond. Not far past the pond we took a small path to the right that led us onto the track above. We turned right onto this to double back along the other side of the fishing pond and returned across the bridge.

From there Mike returned to the car, but I went up along Holly Hall Lane above the Don Valley, keeping to the top of the wood all the way to the Green Moor Road, then right down the road and bending to the left to meet Mike and the car at the entrance to Wortley Top Forge. That's worth a look if you find it open.

From there we drove further on along the road, turning left after the road crosses the river through pretty hamlets, with the river below us to the left. About a mile along this road just past Woodman Farm and by some houses where the road bends sharply right, find somewhere to park an walk down a path between houses to the river and some stepping stones. On a warm day this is a delightful place to dip the toes, listen to the birds and the sound of the rushing river. From here we drove up to Thurgoland to the A629 going right to return to Sheffield. If you do this on foot You could return to Wortley along the Trans Pennine Trail, turning right onto it about 450 metres from the hamlet where the stepping stones are. This would give you a nice walk of about 6 miles altogether.

Linacre Reservoirs

This is a lovely area to visit. The reservoirs are a couple of miles west of Chesterfield. You can take your pick of ways to walk here. We parked our car opposite Upper Ashgate Farm on a little parking area. We walked down a path to the right of the buildings opposite the car park. On reaching a cultivated field we turned left and then right down the edge of it. At the bottom we headed for and went through a gate into woodland. At the reservoir we turned left to walk along the southern edge. At the dam at the far end we turned right beneath the dam and walked to some steps up the other side and across the channel that flows down to the reservoir. We turned left along the northern edge of the next reservoir, soon finding a gate on the left that allowed us to walk by the water's edge.

Towards the end of this reservoir we found a path that took us up to the track above to return eastwards. At the dam we returned walking this time on top of it. The path bent slightly to the left and then we went right uphill to leave the wood and walk around a field to meet a track. We continued straight up here to the road and walked left back along the road, past the church and to the car.
